The Unofficial Guide to Acronyms
[ in relation to noobs ]

Tank: Healthy, beefy, high armor class or high advoidance character intended to stand between mobs (see below) and everyone else. Specializes in using taunts to hold the aggro (see below) of hostile mobs (I said, see below). Noob tanks use weapons they feel will do the most damage, and attempt to use them from the rear of enemy mobs as they attack the group healer. They insist it is the best way for them to do damage and help the group, or complain that they are afraid they will die if they use their taunt abilities. That of couse assumes they recognize that they have a taunt ability.

Examples frequently heard by noobs:
"Dude! Your a tank, not a DPS. Where the hell is your shield at and put that freaking green con 2 hander away?!!?"
"Taunt man! TAUNT! YOUR THE F'N TANK!"

Noob or Newb: A greenstick or greenhorn. New to the game. Understands little. Cannot follow directions. Causes the death of many. Otherwise known as professional experience debt brokers. Has difficulty even finding appropriate zones to solo or group within. Frequently shouts questions about very basic in-game features such as, "How do I attack?" or "I'm dead, what do I do now?" Related words; Noobie or Newbie.

Mob: Monsters, creatures or generally hostile NPCs (see below, noob). Frequently aggressive and KOS (yes, once again, see below noob) to all players. Noob players have a penchant for creating large trains (ahem, you know the drill) that typically endager or outright kill innocent bystanders and players engaged in external hostile engagements with mobs of their own.

Nuke: To damage via spell or similar "magically" inclined power, typically at range and with extreme prejudice. Most frequently the forte of mages. When said to a noob by groupmates who indicate action, it generally implies mashing your attack keys profusely at a designated target.

Examples frequently heard by noobs:
"W-T-F!! We just told you not to nuke those until the tank pulls them!"
"Anyone got a feather token? The noob pulled the derv mage before you all got here and I got nuked."

NPC: Non-player character. Any entity representing a virtual being not played by another person in the game. Noobs can be identified easily around NPC's as they attempt to carry on conversations with them, thinking of course, that the NPC is a player in the game. These conversations become more obvious when the noob becomes hostile to the NPC, claiming the "player" is being rude by not answering their pleas for help or questions about the game in general.

Add: When an unintentioned hostile mob engages the party, usually though not always during an already existing combat with another set of mobs. Noobs have the specialized skill of creating or drawing "adds" to their party, especially during important and very difficult fights. They often do this intentionally, thinking that the group would want more loot or experience from the additional mobs.

KOS: Kill-On-Sight. Indicates an NPC who is hostile and who will "kill on sight" specified player or players. Noobs often find that they can cause NPC's in the game to become KOS to them and their group mates, even when the game designers never intended for those NPC's to be hostile to anyone. The most common example of this are city guards who effectively make it impossible for the noob or any friends they may have to be able to enter normally friendly locales, such as home cities.

Train: When a player or players flee from a combat engagement and manage to attract the aggro (*sigh* see below noob) of several other groups of mobs. The resulting mass of enemies chasing the players form a "train". The term implies that of a runaway train which is heading your way, ready to run you over and result in your quick yet gruesome accumulation of experience debt.

Examples frequently heard by noobs:
"I sware to God, if you train our group one more time I'm going to petition you--F'n noob!"
"Cripes! The noob is bringing home a train, get ready everyone."

CC or Crowd Control/Mez or Mezzed: The ability to mesmerize or otherwise turn a hostile mob temporarily non-hostile through the use of spells or combat abilities. Typically broken by any further hostile actions, including the mere presence of a noob.

Examples frequently heard by noobs:
"For crying out loud, do you not know how to assist yet? If you hit the mob it won't stay mezzed."
"If you don't want to do CC then why did you pick an enchanter as your class?"

Camp: A generally safe location in which a player or group of players remain in order to continuously hunt localized mobs. Frequently occurs around spawn locations in which a valuable item can be obtained from specified mobs.

Pull or Pulling: The act of leaving a "camp" in order to draw mobs back for the camping group to engage in safety and without threat of "adds" occuring. More organized groups will designate a "puller", or a single player who has skills that contribute to their success in pulling desired mobs without attracting the attention of unwanted hostile enemies. Most often this is a tank or scout who has range, unless a noob is present. In the latter case the noob is usually the person with the least hps and armor class and has a knack for garnering the unwanted attention of the most dangerous mob within the zone.

LFG: The first acronym that noobs seem to learn which means Looking For Group. In fact, most suspect that noobs begin the game with this acronym subconsiously existing. Inevitably it is the LFG noob that will be first invited into a hopeful team. However, contrary situations to this do occur with some frequency. Examples might be the experienced player who was LFG and is invited to a group consisting entirely of noobs who are currently dead and are hoping the experienced fighter they recruited can resurrect them. In many cases the group of noobs will wait until 5 seconds after the newest player has joined the team before dying, thereby earning them "insta-debt" by the mere act of joining the group.

Examples frequently offered by noobs:

"Level 6 mage LFG"--Nektulous forest chat entry
"Level 6 mage LFG"--from prone/dead position in Nektulous forest
"mage LFG, will someone please invite me"--after continued non-response from others in Nektulous forest
"LFG--I can't get a group in this game, will someone PLEASE invite me"--after repeated non-response from others in Nektulous forest
"I'll LFG anywhere I want."--response to an experienced player who just recommended they go to one of the lowbie zones to find a group.
"Level 6 mage, LFG--you guys suck, I hate this game."--after two more hours in Nektulous forest.
"Thanks for inviting me, can anyone rez me?"--After someone mistakenly invited them into their team in Nektulous forest.

AFK: It means Away From Keyboard. Noobs do not use this acronym but rather leave their computer unattended at critical times without warning. Usually they are also the healer of the group. However, a small segment of noobs do figure out the /afk command. These noobs leave it on even when they are not AFK, causing the group to stand around wasting time because they think the noob is not at their computer.

DPS: Damage per second. Used as a measure of the damage output of a specific character or a class of characters. A high DPS indicates the ability to inflict gross amounts of damage compared to other classes or players. In groups, noobs frequently have DPS of zero until they can figure out how to chat....and ask someone how they attack.

Aggro: Gaining the direct attention of a hostile creature. Generally tanks are intended to "hold" aggro, ensuring that they are the only group member who takes damage and enabling the other group members to carry out their combat related skills unimpeded. Noobs generally have no concept of the existence of aggro and proceed to plod straight forward into dangerous areas, resulting in the creation of trains in many of these cases. Some, however, are the exact opposite, and fear to move anywhere in the game without extensive direction or assistance due to the belief that everything is hostile to them. These noobs are most often located in their inn rooms, huddled in a corner for fear that the innkeeper will attack at any moment.

Examples frequently heard by noobs:

"Listen man, you've got to stop casting your buffs over and over in combat. I can't hold the aggro if you do that."
"Christ! Will you use your AoE taunt? The rest of us can't deal with the aggro if you don't use it."
"OMG--I can't believe you aggro'd the whole camp."

Aggro Range: The distance at which a hostile mob will begin to attack. For noobs, this is any distance necessary to attack the group they belong too while everyone is heavily wounded and out of power. The aggro range of mobs also extends through walls, floors or other impediments which would normally not affect an experienced player.

RUN: Not actually an acronym though most noobs will stand around trying to figure out what it means. It indicates an urgent message to flee from nearby hostile mobs. Exclamations at the end only stress its use as a warning and does not indicate that it is in fact "lewt" or "dude" speak.

Pwn & Teh: The inept and witless conjurations of hormone imbued adolescents who believe that improper spelling is cool and a way of conveying status among other hormone imbued adolescents. Largely this is because they are unable to type with any accuracy, in or out of a critical occasion and they give credit to their mistyped words as though they are a badge of honor. Some are actually able to chew gum during this process as well. Noobs frequently mistake the online speech of such people as their peers, to be respected and followed, even emulated.
