April 10, 2007

I just wanted to let folks know that we are putting the finishing touches on Chapter 6 this week and hope to move it to the Test Center sometime next week. Most of the major functionality is in and we are addressing some polish and game play tweaks at this point. We want to give QA plenty of time to really hammer on this before letting the players get their hands on it. This has been one of the most aggressive Chapters we have published, with a lot of moving parts, but I believe that everyone will be quite pleased with how it is shaping up. Design and Engineering have had their heads down in code for weeks to get this all ready and it has paid off.

We are also nearing completion on the House Purge planning and phase I implementations and will be putting out some information on this soon. To ease some concerns I have seen in the forums, the plan for marking houses as abandoned and eligible for removal is only for players who have not been subscribed for over one year. Former players will have plenty of time to come in and resubscribe before their structures are packed up.

Once we have Chapter 6 on the TC and working well, we will start talking about our plans for Chapter 7. We will be using the information we have been getting from our polling to guide us as we plan future enhancements to the game, so I think you will be excited about what we have in mind. Those players that voted for PvE content that did not take the top spot in the poll should not despair as we will be trying to hit all of the possible features that gained significant support (yes...that does mean that we will be doing some space content before too long). As always we will continue to address current issues with hot fixes and special updates.

I appreciate everyone's patience as we have prepared this Chapter and ask for just a little more as we try and get it as good as we can before we put it out there. I think this is a great and passionate community and rest assured that the devs read a lot of the boards to get a handle on what the players are seeing in the game and what they want. We don't often have the bandwidth to get involved in long discussions, but know that you are heard. Keep up the great discussions (well...there are a few that...eh...never mind), and keep an eye on TC prime.

Otazky a odpovede:

Q: Please tell me you included an option to 'tone down' particle effects.
A: Sorry Ikict, the controls for particle effects are not in C. 6, but they are currently on the list for C. 7.

Q: Can you link this please? If it's another bogus roumor or the like, I would rather try and let DM explain first. But this link is: http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/serverlockingSWG If it's true... I'm gone for good.
A: Please people...Read to the bottom...Submitted by A. P. Ril on April 1st...This and any other posts about merges at this time are all false. There will be no merges this year. We will do the house purge as I said before. We may look at the small pop issues again next year, but for now the plan is to keep all galaxies going.

Q: You are aware that restricted modifier's are broke right? We've put together a list so far as to which one's don't work as SEAs which can be found here. I feel like I'm talking to a brick wall that only responds to graffiti.
A: Yes...We know the issues. Broken modifiers will be addressed. It is one of the issues at the top of the list. It will be in a hotfix, but I cannot say which one. I read a ton of posts and we collect a list of the top issues in the community on a weekly basis. Most of our hotfixes come from these lists. It always has to be balanced with what we can do while still moving forward on the Chapter.

Q: DeadMeat, can you please comment on one issue I have. I keep hearing 'Housing Purge' and not 'Structure Purge', which is bothering me... there ARE tons of abandoned factories that need to go, and maybe even some harvesters. Are houses really the only thing being looked at, and if so, why? Harvesters aren't that big of an issue since they eventually blow up, but there are many condemned factories.
A: Yep...All player owned structures will be eligible for the purge, not just houses.

Q: With the housing purge, must it be the owner of the structure or can anyone on the administrator list cancel the packup?
A: It must be the owner...We will be letting people on the admin lists know that structures they admin are flagged.

Q: Love the communication, and the tone of the communication SMILEY:thumbup: Anyhow, I can't find it and I'm sure it will be asked...but the "mothballed" TC server is going to be brought back (the one with frogs) to test chapter 6.....right?
A: That is correct...Both the new TC and the old "frogged" TC will be avilable to test Chapter 6.

Q: are you guys going to post anything else about CH6 or are you just going to wait to it hits TC since its next week?
A: Not sure what you are asking there...We have been posting information about C. 6 for quite awhile. In terms of the low level details, instructions, etc. they will be published when it hits the TC. And of course things change between release to TC and release to live.

Q: Hey DM, I just had to respond to this as it somewhat worries me and here is why. Take a game like EQ2, and see how polished it is, with its lush graphics, slick contols, robust UI. THen look at SWG and its revamp after revamp that leaves the game in shambles, push for new content that only adds new bugs and leaves the playerbase wanting more, time and time again.
Now lets look at the forums, the EQ2 forums are always up and runing. Posts seem to be very frequest and informative from the dev team of exactly whats coming up and any changes going on. Now back to the SWG forums and we get get very little information, besides the usual we cant say to much beyond what we are currently working on. Our forums are slow and error out all day long.
Now with these two comparisions, it would appear that SWG is not only the more popular, but also more profitable, yet we are in need of the most attention and it seem that (from my perspective) that games like EQ2 get more dev time than SWG. Now I could be wrong on all this, but this game (even with chao 6 on the horizon) still needs so myuch more and I feel that time is running out. So in short, what is the structured plan for the future of this game, beyond chap 7, beyond 2008?
A: EQ2 is a much newer game, with a much higher minimum machine requirement, so that is the main difference in terms of graphics. You can still play SWG on a fairly modest machine. EQ2 is on the same forum software, same hardware, etc. When SWG forums go down, so do EQ2's. I cannot comment on the level of communication from their dve team. My guys honestly try and post when they have something to contribute, but I know that some folks would like more, but I think we do well given our work loads.
I did not mean to imply that SWG had more players, made more money, etc. by saying that it has the most active forums. It simply has a very high number of posts given the number of players...Essentially I am saying you guys make a big noise for your size SMILEY:-?.
My plan is to continue to deliver the best game we can. I cannot give you the very long term plan you want. Sorry.

Q: Can you tell us about the chapter gift? I hope it's not a item for decorateing our houses cause we have too much of that as it is.
A: Well, its a very cool item that seems destined to dissappoint you StarBuck. We have some cool vet rewards coming but to be honest, we tend to focus on the Chapter features, not spending a huge amount of time on the gift.

Q: I hope you can answer this...Is the space content to be added going to be more or less the same old stuff, just rewashed (duties, escorts, dock with this ship...now stay here and wait for this ship to arrive) Or are we finally going to get some more cool abilities like reloading missiles from within a POB, factionally controlled space sectors giving bonuses to ground troops if your faction has control, Boarding with capital ships, stuff like that?
A: Don't get me wrong, I want space to more or less stay the same mechanically...just want more stuff to do, rather than just the same old pve missions, or going to Deep Space and blowing up the ISD and getting no GCW. We are still just in the thinking stage about space. We will certainly try and introduce a few new craftable ships and such, certainly some missions, etc. Beyond that things are pretty wide open. Blix will come up with some cool stuff I am sure...He always does.

Q: For GUILD HALLS, it was common practice to create a mule account to own it since it required 9 lots (which was rediculous!). Those Mule accounts are long gone. Once the structure is condemned, admins can no longer get inside to pay the maintenance. We can pay maintenance for factories, since the control panel is not hidden, but for structures you have to go inside for access to pay the maintance, and if its condemned then the admins can't go inside. Any chance you guys can fix this?!?
So could you guys either allow admins to enter condemned buildings, or let admins pay the maintenance from outside, so we can access these structures (if even for a short time)?
In my case, I have a guild hall named "Stilgar's Weapons" and Stilgar is not the owner (Stilgar used a mule account to own his guild hall since he owned merchant tents to sell his weapons). Stilgar took a break from the game for a year and found his posessions all locked up in a condemned guild hall, which was a bummer. Stilgar has lots of credits, and would be happy to pay for the guild hall maintenance, or transfer ownership to himself, but currently cannot do anything.
I don't think I'm alone in this situation. Is there any way you guys could let admins retrieve contents of condemned structures?
A: Yep, there are a number of tricky situations here. I'll be honest, there are a number of exploits and customer service nightmares involved with changing rules about what admins can and cannot do to another player's property. We will look at possible ways of addressing this, but I do not want to give you too much hope at this point.

I have waited and planned and built my strength for fifteen thousand years. I have evolved. It is time.
